Keyword Research Using Google’s Keyword Planner

Why use the Google Keyword Planner?

Google Keyword Planner is a GREAT tool to do keyword research for your SEO purposes. In fact, I find it to be the most thorough free keyword research tool available. The Keyword Planner allows you to make decisions about which keywords to use in your blog posts, articles, and other content you create as well as what keywords to bid on if you do paid ads.

Prerequisites to using the Google Keyword Planner

To use the google keyword planner, you’ll need a google adwords account. If you need instructions on how to create one, you can find them here. Expect to enter a credit card and make a campaign. It might take you half an hour to open an account due to these extra steps you’ll need to take, but it’s well worth the effort and will be good for years to come. Even if you never plan to run a paid ad, you should still open an account, doing whatever it takes to open the account, even if you never use the campaign that you’ll be asked to create.

How to use the Google Keyword Planner

First sign into your google adwords account. Then find the Keyword Planner in the drop down menu under Tools and Analysis.

Using the Keyword Planner, you can discover the search volume (number of people searching monthly) and competition level (volume of businesses bidding) for a particular search term. You’ll want to select and use keywords that have a high search volume but a low competition level.

In the example above, the word “blog” has a high search volume and a low competition, but it’s actually probably too vague a term to be a very strong keyword, but it can still be used in strategic ways, as mentioned in one of my earlier blog posts, “How to Blog“.
